D-Art & The MAC Subindex
duplicate letters of support from the Meadows FoundationOn this page are scans from the original letter signed by Visual Arts Center Project Coordinator Mary Wachowiak-Ward on Artists Coalition of Texas stationary, dated June 1, 1980. It is the earliest official document tying ACT (the organization that later changed its name to D-ART) to the project to create a Visual Arts Center for Dallas. It also establishes that Mary W. Ward alone was the project's first manager.

Mary Ward Documents
The original letter from Mary Wachowiak-Ward to participants present at The First Meeting, held on May 12, 1980.
Note the staple at the top and the multiple page edges and corners, especially visible at the bottom left corner of the above image.
The letter continues in the attachment below, including "New Participants." Note that none of the people listed in the first-known list of D-ART board or steering committee members are on this list.
These pages are reproduced in full page size. In the following page, Mary Ward defines basic terms of her proposed Visual Arts Center for Dallas.
The Facts and definitions for the new project continue on the following attachment. Please note that the Project Coordinator named by ACT is Mary Ward and no other, and that the Planning Proposal — as defined above — was set for July of 1980. Most subsequent documents refer to the actual beginning of D'ART, A Visual Art Center for Dallas in September of 1980.
Proceedings from The First Meeting are listed in the following attachment to the letter at the top of this page.
Upper inside text from an invitation from D'Art Art Center for a ribbon-cutting by Mayor Jack Evans and a Thursday, November 5, 1981 opening of the new "D'Art Art Center," at 2917 Swiss Avenue. Note positioning of D-Art's founder and the misspelling of Judy Smith-Hearst.
