Sendup of the
North
Dallas Artists
Studio Tour
Story by
J R Compton
This story originally appeared on the DallasArtsRevue Arts Calendar:
Oh, what a surprise! The brilliant PR persons at North Dallas Artist Studio Tour 10-6 Saturday April 30, 2005 have taken me off their mailing list after my comments in last year's Best & Worst of Dallas (guess which?) Art story.
Included are artists Jane Stephenson, Joanne Murdock, Karen Gilboux, Ann Gavin, Anne Fairchild, Martha Box, Jane Bayne, Deborah Shannon, Jeanne Sanders, Peg Rosenlund, Elizabeth Padgett, Anne Norvell, Ellen Niewyk, Sue Gordon, Bill Kysor, Marilyn Eitzen Jones, Reed Hoover, Maureen Horner, Kathleen Dello Stritto, Annie David, Barbara Park, Ann Cushing Gantz, Adriana Cobo-Frenkel, Jo Taylor, Pat Kochan and Naomi Brotherton.
The budget for this tour has obviously skyrocketed. This year's invitation has two dozen full collor illustrations — although none of them are identified. But I recognize a big black Lab ... (He died a coupla years ago. I used to call him "Rug," 'cause that's what he did best. I don't remember his real name.
But he was a dear dog, kept me warm when I had altitude sickness driving through the mountains of New Mexico, was always gentle and, seemed like, caring.) ... who's on the front, back and inside of this slick brochure with a fading sculpted angel on the inside front cover.
I like his spirit imbuing an art tour — he was an Art Dog and a trooper on the trail.
Everybody I talked to who went last year — especially DARts Member Kathy Boortz (See her DARts Member page of art.) said it was a wonderful tour.
Probably it will be again.
Still no website. I suggest you start at one of the following studios and pick up a map there, if you're not on somebody’s mailing list, already, too:
Annie Davis, 6621 Tulip Lane (Mapsco 25G); Kathleen Dello Stritto, 3461 St. Cloud Circle (23D) This image is from her painting of Rug and Richard [about whom I wrote a poem] that’s on the brochure twice; Anne Norvell, 6015 Norway (25K) It was her mailing to another DARts Member that got me my tour brochure; or Deborah Shannon, 6515 Northport Drive, near Hilcrest & Royal Lane.
They really ought to have the sense to send me one, no matter what I say about their PR.
All but one of the artists are tucked neatly between Central Expressway, LBJ, Webb Chapel Road and Walnut Hill Lane, so you might could just drive around looking for yellow Artist Tour signs in that area.
Tell 'em J R sent ya!
Two days after I published this, I got two tour brochures in the mail. One with no return address (?) and the other from Deborah Shannon, whose address I've added to the short list above. Thanks.
