The 8th Annual
White Rock Lake
Artists Tour Saturday, October 7, 2000

Driving down the street to the Ballard home, the neighborhood seemed ordinary. Until her house sparkled into view. Here was a semi- surreal vista. A nice, middle class gray home and yard populated with art instead of people.

Up the driveway and through the busy garage, even more human- form sculptures inhabited a green, serene back yard, where the real people seemed to fit right in with a small, dark angel called "Guardian I," and a variety of colored groupings of naked statues. Debbie calls the ladies on the right, the "Three Graces." Left is one of the Graces.I had to wonder why the lady ( below ) was so broken up and not held together better. But Debbie tells me it is because she was sculpted from terra cotta clay, which most artists have to fire in separated, small pieces, so they'll fit in smallish kilns. Although I have heard of room- and house- sized kilns, nobody I know has one.

And this photo tour of the White Rock Tour should go on and on, representing many more lake- area artists, but alas, I got started way late -- after nearly forgetting the whole thing. And although I visited several other artists' spaces, these are, by far, the best pictures. -- J R Compton
