Nothing
© 2000 by A.M. Hudson

I've made a few attempts but the most accurate would be a blank page. It is interesting though. Thought on the issue did give birth to a realization. The word nothing. I looked it up.

1 a) no thing; not anything; naught b) no part, element, trace, etc. "Nothing of kindness in him"
2 a) something of little or no value, seriousness, etc.; trifle b) a person considered to be of no value or importance
n.
3 nonexistence; nothingness
4 a thing that does not exist
5 a) something of little or no value, seriousness, etc.; trifle (see also SWEET NOTHINGS) b) a person considered to be of no value or importance
6 a naught; zero; cipher

I've always loved space. No, not outer space, just space. I don't fill the page with elements I mix them with space. I realized in college that space was something. Well, nothing is something too. It is just no thing and I have misunderstood this word for more than 50 years.

I suppose I would gladly let this stand as my self portrait. The understanding that if rocks have a spirit, then so maybe does space. Nothing is something that may have a spirit as well.

Michael Richard Helsem
was born beneath a veldt sun.
Lacking intrinsic glamour
he got to be real good at grammar.

Wrote this the other day but i don't like it:

The Language of the Land

I am a fathomed & a furtive thing;
A sky between weathers; Druid indigo
Worn by a clown; fiercely shy, i give
To strangers yet withhold from closest; book
Elliptical, & candlelit the game;
Obsessed, skeptical, loopy with homemade kif;
Architect of vanished Nineveh;

And sometime after me they'll reck my runes.
