Best Me-Too Artform of the year

Vertical stripe painting. First we saw was William Betts at The Texas Biennial and later at Holly Johnson. Since then there's been John Holt Smith at William Campbell. and too many others. Unrelenting stripes. Nothing new, just stripes. Yipes!

We have many exciting gallery events coming up these next few months. In September, all the galleries are full in anticipation of the Fort Worth Art Dealers Association Fall Gallery Night on September 10th. The Fort Worth Community Arts Center is hosting an After Gallery Night Party from 9PM to 12 midnight. Tickets are $10 at the door, and that includes 2 drink tickets, food, live music and all the dancing you can stand. Don't stop coming after September, though, because October galleries are full as well with great art. The Exhibition Advisory Panel of the Fort Worth Community Arts Center presents Figuring In...Texas Art, curated by Daniel Blagg. Featured artists are Ed and Linda Blackburn, Ron Cheek, Grant Guilliams, Susan Harrington, John Hartley, Sedrick Huckaby, Nancy Lamb, JoAnn Mulroy and Devon Wattier. The exhibit is survey of the figure in contemporary Texas art. The American Institute of Architects of Fort Worth will display Cross Sections, artwork by architects. The Fort Worth Weavers Guild 50th Anniversary Show will fill several galleries, with a sale of items on October 8th. The International Society of Experimental Artists has their annual exhibit from October 4 - 29th. The Texas Wesleyan University art exhibit features Chance Encounters: recent works by Gary Washmon. Local artist and teacher Tom Delaney's exhibit Animals will feature his newest work exploring the animal world. Opening receptions will fall on October 7th and 8th, and the public is welcome.

November has more art and more art, with most receptions falling on November 4th. Texas Wesleyan University art exhibit features Jill Foley's, BFA Candidate Senior Project. The Fort Worth Weavers Guild 50th Anniversary Show is still on display. The Front Gallery will have an exhibition of art inspired by Los Dias de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), with a reception on November 2nd for the artists. Also, Centro Cultural de las Americas is sponsoring Sabor Latino (yummy food tasting) on November 5th.

And in December, come see the first FWCAC 9 x 12 Paper Show. Artists will mail their artwork to the Fort Worth Community Arts Center in a 9" x 12" envelope. The artwork may be a print, a drawing, a painting, a photograph or some sort of mixed media. All artwork will be on sale during December for the low cost of $100. These will make great holiday presents. 20% of the sales will go to the Arts Center for future programming, and 80% will go to the artist. Other exhibits in December are the 3rd Art Educators Advisory Board High School Invitational presented by Texas Wesleyan University, and The Miracle of Rose, artwork by Rose Abraham.

Jumping ahead to 2006, in March we will see the return of one of the FWCAC's most popular events: The FWCAC Biennial, formerly known as the 39 Hour Show. In 2004, over 740 artists participated, and there are sure to be more in 2006 for this much-anticipated exhibition. The Biennial is open to all with a $5 entry fee. All artwork for the 2006 FWCAC Biennial must be under 36" x 36" x 36" and can only be brought in Wednesday, March 1 through Friday, March 3rd from 9A.M. to 9 P.M. The artists' reception will be 6-9PM Saturday, March 4. Volunteers will be needed to help process entries and hang the artwork. Call Elaine Taylor at 817-738-1938 ext. 21 or email at gallerymanager@fwcac.org for more information.
