Artist's Statement

Design & Organization

The first step I take in conceptualizing an idea for my work is to develop a composition utilizing a design structure loosely based on Fibonacci's mathematical sequence (0,1,2,3,5,8,13,21...): Within a format derived from a square unit used 3 times by 5 times, I produce shapes and organize my composition. My attraction to this system can be attributed to my fascination as a child to the family quilts — the juxtaposing, twisting, mirroring, and reversing of shapes.

Content

On top of this formal design, I construct images triggered by personal perspectives. I want to establish a relationship between the images and the intricacies of the application.

Shelter

Where do we each find shelter? What protects us? What do we define as our safe havens? Tall trees, arbors, gardens, nature becomes God's shelter. Our houses of worship, like a copse of trees, often offer us shelter as well. This is how it is with me.

As a Quaker, I find this feeling of protection symbolized in our meetinghouse — the quiet of silent worship, each Friend in a chair, the roof overhead. Wherever we find shelter, it is to this place that we bring those things that are special, precious, to us. I bring bundles of memories, friendships, family, and feelings to this cherished place.

Media and Technique

Most frequently I work with mixed media on paper or panel, which provides the base for a substructure of applied surfaces. On top of these textured grounds, I use water-soluble pencils, crayons, and graphite. Often as many as 25 or 30 layers are needed to achieve the visual depth required. In combination with the strata of marks and wipes, I incorporate papers, fabrics, metals, and three-dimensional objects.
 

Biography

Chris Fulmer is a graduate of University of North Texas ( MA in art history ). Trinity University ( BA in art and English ), and the University of Texas at Austin ( BFA ). She also has accumulated a substantial amount of graduate studio hours from Texas Tech University.

She is full-time art teacher at North Lake College, Irving, Texas. Past experiences include: consultant for Binney & Smith, public school art educator, and curriculum development for Laguna Gloria Museum ( Austin, Texas ).

Her award winning work has appeared both nationally and locally in a variety of shows, juried exhibitions, and corporate collections.

Her writing and illustrations have been published by The Dallas Morning News, North Lake College's Gateways, The Irving News' ARTimes, and Artist's Magazine.

Most recently her work has been on exhibit at The Bath House Cultural Center, The Living Arts Warehouse ( Corsicana ), Center for the Arts of Laredo, The Center for Spirituality in the Arts ( Incarnate Word, San Antonio ), The McKinney Avenue Contemporary Gallery, Coppell Arts Center, Unit Instruments, Irving Art Association Center for the Arts, North Lake College, Dallas Visual Arts Center, The Dallas City Hall, The Bill J. Priest Center, and Irving Arts Center.

Her work is represented at the at The Art Annex in Coppell, Texas; and The Carson Gallery in Dallas, Texas.
