Biography

I was born & raised a Third Generation Dallasite. Early on, Fort Worth-born, Architectural Photographer, Douglas E. Tomlinson – who was ten years my senior — helped me become a Professional Photographer at age 18, in Dallas. I had my, "Minorities," removed — to legally sign contracts, and be held responsible for my debts. 'Twenty-one,' was the, ‘Legal Age,’ in Texas, in 1970… It was moved back to 18 — when I was about 21 — in 1973. Since Doug was, ‘Color-blind’ — we built me a Color Darkroom in 1971 — to hand process color negatives, positive films, and Positive & Negative prints. I have been a 'Colorist,' ever since. Doug was stricken with Cancer his last four and a half years of life, and passed away in 2005.

Another personal influence — Edward "Ned" Fritz — a Dallas Attorney & Environmentalist. I wanted to concentrate on improving my skills as a nature photographer, and I hoped Ned would have some suggestions. Ned told me he could not offer much over the, ‘art of nature,’ but, he could show me a lot about our natural environment, and in that knowledge – I could benefit.

In 1984, I became friends with Dallas Contemporary Art Collector/Connoisseur, Howard Rachofsky. Howard, a kind intellectual, introduced me, both, to his large scale contemporary art collection, and — to why he was so passionate about those Artists he collected! My immediate favorite was Frank Stella.

Artist Statement

Knowing Howard Rachofsky rerouted my photographic journey for the next 33 years... At age 40 [1993] — I donated my four 4x5, and one 6x7 Diachronic Color Head Enlarger Darkroom — with color-processing equipment, and all of its contents [Wet & Dry], along with my Photography Book Collection — to the Houston Center for Photography [HCP] — as they were dedicated to the teaching of these processes I had known and exercised over several decades...

Then, I sold my Park Cities home. I found a nice, quiet, 50 acre farm — northwest of Tarrant County. There, I waited for, "Digital Photography," to become feasible to professionals in my rank, and learned Auto-CAD, and PhotoShop software programs in the meanwhile… During this period, I also used my credit cards to purchase four years of Education through, The School of Visual Arts, at The University of North Texas, at Denton – where Sculpture & English were my Concentrations. Afterwards, I also worked my skills as a photographer/reporter for three years with several county-wide newspapers out west – in Palo Pinto, and Parker Counties.

On my, ‘Perrin Farm,’ I began distilling my process for making, "Abstract Digital Artifacts." The first ones came together in 2003-4 — twenty years since I had met Howard Rachofsky, and set out on this quest.

This new artform variation of Abstraction reflects the times, and as art is always growing, historically — Electronically Created Art [ECA], and my Digital Artifacts, may now take their place in line. My new art portfolio is 14 years-filled with Digital Artifacts… I have been a working professional photographer for 47 years — I took my first true 6x7 [B&W] ‘Nature’ image — when I was five [1957] with an Argus 6X6 Twin-lens my grandmother had shown me how to use. Including my grandmother's film collection [Erline Thompson Moore] — my image library contains 80 years of family archives, and is nearly 400 years deep – when including my films of all the earliest ink-plated prints I could access from a Rare Book Collection.

While I may also be somewhat of a hermit, I am a Folk 'Digital Constructionist' & Abstract Artist — creating Digital Artifacts which can be [using archival ink-sets] printed on canvas, or other heavy-bonded archival papers. I prefer ‘Luster’ surfaces… My files may be ‘treated’ for other hardware media – to meet other specific 3-D outcomes...
