Ken Shaddock   The Skyship, Michael, and the Door to the Unknown, 2009   digital collage

The Skyship sputters in the starlit sky as Michael makes his way across the field. In the distance the house on the ridge seems to be tracking him, measuring his progress in the darkness. He knows this can not be, since houses can't move like living things can. He pulls his cap and jacket tighter against the cold, ahead he spies his destination. The Door to the Unknown sits in shadow, awaiting Michael's arrival, across from the entrance to the ruined Garden. Michael stops. Someone is watching. He smells the exhaust fumes from the Skyship as it spirals above him, illuminating the ground with its flames. He turns and puts his hand in his pocket, touching the folding knife he has brought in case of danger. He stands very still and gazes across the hedge into the ruined Garden. He can barely make out the face in the darkness, but he is not afraid; the Door to the Unknown is waiting."
