The White Rock Lake Journal Exhibition at the Bath House

Definition
For the past four years, I have been documenting White Rock Lake and Park on a daily to weekly basis using digital cameras. The first project, using a low resolution digital camera, was called “The White Rock Lake Digital Foto Project.”
When I moved the project to a new web address, I changed the name to “The White Rock Lake Journal,” and concentrated more on photographs than descriptions . Then, when I got my newer and much higher resolution, 5-megapixel camera a little more than a year ago, I changed the name to JR’s New White Rock Lake Journal.
It is online at: www.DallasArtsRevue.com/O/newWR-j/WRL-j_i.shtml
For this proposal, I am calling the collection of photographs “The White Rock Lake Journal.”
It is a journal because, in addition to the often changing color photographs I present on those web pages, I date each image and provide text describing the weather that day or my state of mind. I try to make it poetic and always keep it short.
This exhibition will feature the very best images from this ongoing project in the form of framed archival color prints in 8-1/2 x 11 inch prints for the low resolution images; and 11 x 14 inch up to 13 x 19 inch prints for the more recent, higher resolution images.
In addition to the photographs in this show, I would like to include just a few excerpts of some of those short journal entries. The excerpts would be typed on the identity cards.
Examples of photographs are on the Sample Photographs pages of this proposal. A few of the journal entries are there, too.
Why the Bath House
The choice of The Bath House Cultural Center is an obvious one, because the lake and park that I document in this long series of photographs is just outside the back door of the center.
Several of the photos I expect to exhibit were actually shot off the back porch, and the BHCC itself appears in some of the works as background or featured subject.
In addition, the BHCC has acquired a reputation for presenting excellent photographic exhibitions. It’s a good place to look at good photographs.
Outreach/Education Opportunities
I’d love to take an informal class of photographers of various ages and experience levels with me, walking out in any direction around the lake, to take pictures for an hour. That’s how long I usually walk when I take White Rock Lake Journal photo, since I walk for my health as well as the photographic experience. Both aspects would be beneficial to the other participants as well. Besides, it’d be nice to have company for a change. Fellow touring photographers could use either film or digital cameras, which I could help them with.
I have taught photography both in the Air Force and at El Centro College, for credit and non-credit classes. I’m a good teacher, and I love teaching photography. It’d be fun for me and for members of the informal class.
Potential Benefits to the Citizens of Dallas
Citizens will benefit from The Exhibition by getting to see photographs of what’s going on just outside the doors of the gallery they’d see the photographs in. Sometimes amazing little things and activities they could easily see, if only they took the time and effort — and walked here as often as I do.
This photographic show would enhance their knowledge and enjoyment of Dallas’ most beautiful and interesting inner-city lake and park. Most Dallas citizens have some experience with White Rock Lake and those memories will help them identify with my ongoing project and the people, places, animals and plants in the photographs.
Potential Benefits to meI love sharing my photographs with people, so it would, of course, make me happy to show my White Rock Lake Journal photographs in that public space.
It would also help me promote the online, totally non-commercial version of the White Rock Lake Journal, whose photographs change every week, so more people could share those images, too.
It might even help me contact someone who knows the true names for some of the birds and plants I photograph there. I’d love to talk with people who know more about the herons, pelicans and other birds that are featured in my photographs.
Special Needs/Demands on BHCC Resources
All photographs will be framed, wired, and ready to hang. I have extensive experience producing, hanging and lighting art exhibitions, so I can assist the BHCC staff in placing and hanging the exhibition. For more details, see the Exhibitions Produced pages of my resume.
The exhibition.
For more details, see the Exhibitions Produced page of my resume.
In addition, I am an experienced and often published Publicity Writer (I wrote PR for for DARE, Allen Street Gallery and still write it for DallasArtsRevue, and I would be able write and distribute my own publicity — working closely with the BHCC staff.
Of course, I would publicize the show on www.DallasArtsRevue.com, which I publish. It gets around 21,000 visitors each month.
I also would happily contribute to the fund for gallery snacks and drinks.
This proposed exhibition would, I believe, place minimal additional time and financial demands on the BHCC staff and resources.
Gallery Desired
Of course, I’d love to show in the Main Gallery, and I could easily fill that up with best work from my past and future White Rock Lake Journal photo documentation.
My next choice would be the Classroom Gallery in back. I could hang my work salon style back there, arranged by themes, such as birds or water or people.
My third choice is obvious. I’ve seen many excellent little photo shows in the Hall Gallery. Hey, I’d be happy just to show my White Rock Lake photographs along the edge of White Rock Lake.
Number of Works Included
The number of photographs included in this proposed exhibition will vary according to which gallery I’d get to use and the sizes of the selected work. I would expect to exhibit my photographs in a tastefully arranged salon style — not just a single line of pictures around the gallery -- and in a variety of sizes.
From my preliminary research, I would expect to be able to fit the following approximate number of works in the galleries listed:
Main Gallery - up to 30 photographs
Classroom Gallery - up to 40 photographs
Hallway Gallery - up to 21 photographs
Calendar Requirements
topI have no specific calendar requirements for this exhibition, which includes photographs taken on bright, sunny days, in summer heat, in rain, snow, floods and storms. Anytime during the year would be appropriate for this exhibition. If you can work it into your schedule, great.
Slides/Prints of Work
Prints of the finally selected work will be submitted to the BHCC staff on an agreed upon timetable.
You will find sample photographs for the exhibition described in this proposal on the Sample Photographs pages and on the covers of my proposal.
