Marty Mitchener - Poppies, 2005 — Her member page isn't up yet, but her show was.
DARts Member Marty Mitchener - Images from the Heart at other DARts Member 14th Street Gallery in Plano through February 28
There's another show at the gallery during Marty's, but those landscape paintings are so bad and ordinary and boring, that you don't want to know about them — or at least I don't. Here's a gallery that has distinguished itself by showing bleeding and leading and even some pretty good trailing edge photography, and now they're showing student work landscape paintings? How utterly weird. -JRC
Kenda North, Isaac Smith and Jeanette Chinelli at Craighead-Green through February 10
I've written about Kenda's lovely, floating visions before, and I'll probably write about them again (maybe soon). It's always a delight finding a new one at Craighead-Green or other group shows, so a third of a gallery full of them will be pretty wonderful.
In the press kit for this show is an ink-jet print of a guy in a suit in a pool (and there's another guy in the story linked above). So she does guys, too. But her images of women have a special, feminine elegance and grace and floatiness.
Those female forms, with their ruffles and sheer and lightweight materials suspended in variously transparent liquid — as if caught in slow-motion — are especially enchanting, each a silent story.
And I just have to wonder who'd let her sink their violin in there, but my! what an enchanting image (above) and story worth extrapolating. -JRC
